My friend and colleague, Karen Mendon from California State University Los Angeles approached me regarding a suggested text for an assessment course that she was scheduled to teach. Although there are several books on the market that address portfolio development, assessing student learning in elementary physical education, and creating rubrics —as well as the Assessment Series from the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), I could not think of a single book that addressed standards-based assessment and grading in physical education for Grades K-12. And, thus the impetus for the creation of this textbook.

Chapter 1 provides an introduction to standards-based curriculum and instruction as well as the role that assessment plays in a standards-based program. The chapter presents a five-step process for developing assessments that serves as a model throughout the book. It also explains the three phases of assessment implementation and provides six guidelines for providing quality assessment in physical education.

Chapters 2 and 3 describe with the tools used for assessment. Chapter 2 explains checklists, journals, logs, motor skill/fitness tests, reports/projects, role-playing/simulations, structured observations, and written tests. Chapter 3 goes into detail describing rubrics and providing examples.

The six National Standards are presented in Chapters 4-9. The five-step assessment development process is reviewed for each standard. Additionally, numerous examples are provided for each standard.

Chapters 10 and 11 bring the various assessments together. Chapter 10 describes the use of student portfolios: paper based and digital. Chapter 11 explains how to create a standards-based report card and determine a final grade to symbolize student learning.
